This
research paper examined patient satisfaction focusing on comparing physicians,
residents, and registered nurses in the Department of Orthopedics, Police
General Hospital. The main purposes of the paper were (1) to evaluate patient
satisfaction with care as managed by different types of providers : physicians,
residents, and registered nurses, and (2) to examine the factors related to
levels of satisfaction regarding the communication of physicians, residents,
and registered nurses with their patients. The data were collected from 60
patients who were admitted in the orthopedic wards in January 2003, using
questionnaires. The findings revealed that patients were more satisfied with
the physicians’ communication than the other providers’. The factors that
influenced the levels of patient satisfaction were: age, marital status, types
of payment, and the length of stay.
Since communication in health
care context is complex, to be successful, health care providers in the Police
General Hospital need to improve communication skills to respond to patients
continuously. Future research needs to address identification of optimal
methods for communicating with patients who have low literacy levels. Future
research should include collecting long term data in all departments of the
Police General Hospital in order to be representative of all patients in the
entire hospital.
